FAQs About Partners in Abortion Care

General Information

Abortion is one of the safest medical procedures. Major complications are very rare. We will thoroughly discuss any risks associated with abortion during your appointment with us.

We do our best to minimize how long you are in our clinic. Most patients can expect to be in the clinic for 3-6 hours for first trimester abortions. For multiday abortion procedures, each day is usually 4-6 hours, and the last day is frequently a full day in the clinic with us.

These times are estimates, however, and there may be unpredictable delays that impact this time.

Most abortion procedures take between 5 and 20 minutes. The majority of the time you spend with us is preparing for your abortion and recovering from sedation. Please see question 9 for information about the total time you will be in the clinic.

Recovery time is different for each patient. It is common to be discharged after about 30 minutes if you are having a procedure during your first trimester. Most other patients are discharged after their procedure in less than two hours.

Appointments & Visitors

We offer oral and IV sedation. All patients who would like any form of sedation must have a driver they are safe and comfortable with to drive them home or ride with them in a lyft/uber/bus after having sedation. Many people have their first trimester abortion procedure without sedation and only use numbing medication. If you do not want any sedation at all, you do not need to have anyone drive you home and are safe to drive yourself if you choose.

You can bring one trusted support person over the age of 15 with you to your appointment.

Our clinic has a strict policy prohibiting anyone under the age of 15 from accompanying a patient in our clinic. There are multiple playgrounds, libraries, and other child-friendly options close to our clinic that your childcare provider can visit while you are in our clinic. We are unable to provide childcare, and patients must arrange their own childcare during visits. If you are having a multiday procedure with us, you must have overnight childcare pre-arranged in case you need to be seen in the clinic after hours.

Financial Assistance & Insurance

When you make your appointment, please let a staff member know if you would like resources for financial help. We can provide referrals to non-profit groups who may be able to provide help for patients in need.

It can take several days to arrange funding for your abortion through the non-profit groups. We cannot guarantee we will be able to see you if you wait until the day of your appointment to call the non-profits for financial help. We encourage you to call the non-profits as soon as you make your appointment to make sure there are no delays to your care.

We take Maryland Medicaid at this time.

Post-Abortion Care & Recovery

Feeling cramps during an abortion is normal. We offer a number of medication options to minimize any cramping you may feel. The majority of our patients report they were happy with how any discomfort was managed.

It is normal to have cramping and bleeding after an abortion. Over the counter medications such as tylenol and ibuprofen should help make the cramping manageable.

Most often, the majority of people feel well enough to return to work or school within a few days after their procedure. Some people may feel more comfortable waiting longer than that. You can discuss this with the clinic staff at the time of your appointment.

Our general recommendation is to put nothing in your vagina for about a week after your abortion.

Eligibility & Health Considerations

While there are no medical problems that completely prevent a patient from getting an abortion, there are some times when it is safer for a patient to get their abortion in a hospital setting. When you call to make an appointment, our schedulers will ask you questions about your medical history to make sure that we can safely see you at our clinic. Specifically, you will be asked about your blood pressure, your iron levels, history of abdominal surgeries, and history of seizures.

There are no lifestyle choices which prevent a patient from getting an abortion. We provide nicotine patches for any patients who request them.

A routine abortion should have no impact on your ability to get pregnant and carry a healthy pregnancy in the future. You can get pregnant again as soon as a week or two after an abortion even if you are not having regular periods.
